NSW Labor Candidate for Upper Hunter Jeff Drayton has said he will fight any attempts by the National Party to sell off Muswellbrook’s TAFE campus or any other public assets in the Upper Hunter after the Premier gave a speech yesterday committing to more privatisation and asset sales.
The National Party rushed through the sale of Scone’s TAFE campus just a month ago even though it was the only specialist rural TAFE campus in the Hunter region. Former National Party Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen supported the sale and did not consult the local community.
Since then, the Government has refused to rule any further privatisation of assets in the Upper Hunter.
NSW Labor Candidate for Upper Hunter Jeff Drayton said:
What we heard from Gladys Berejiklian yesterday shows that none of our public assets are safe. The National Party have already sold one of our TAFE campuses at Scone, and the Minister’s refused to rule out the sale of Muswellbrook campus.
“People in this community love TAFE, they know it's how our young people get the skills they need to get ahead in life. The National Party should be listening. Instead, they’ve already sold off one TAFE campus and are planning to sell more.
“Almost one in five young people are unemployed in the Upper Hunter. I will fight for a strong public TAFE system, and I won’t stand for the National Party selling off our TAFE campuses.”
